A Melbourne man accused of dragging a woman from her car and speeding away dressed only in underpants is behind bars after facing court.
Benedict Kearney, 37, allegedly jumped into the back seat of the vehicle at Werribee hospital about 5pm on Monday.
He is said to have forced the 45-year-old from behind the wheel before racing down the wrong side of the road and crashing into an embankment.
Kearney is also accused of causing $5000 damage to a police van during the bizarre spree.
Police previously said the woman tried to stop the alleged carjacker by jumping into the back seat of her car after he dragged her out.
She then restrained the man before officers arrived to arrest him.
Kearney faces six charges including driving at speed on the wrong side of the road, damaging a police vehicle and assaulting an officer.
He is also charged with stealing a vehicle after using force on another person and two counts of assaulting an emergency worker on duty.
Kearney did not apply for bail and the matter was adjourned until October 8.
