Deaths, injuries in arson attack on animation studio

Several people have been killed and dozens more injured in a fire at an animation studio in the western Japanese city of Kyoto.

Local police and rescuers say the fire started when a man sprayed an unknown liquid around the building.

It caught fire, injuring at least 38 people, some of them seriously. The Hollywood Reporter said police had confirmed multiple deaths, but had not said how many people died.

The fire started in the three-story studio of Kyoto Animation – one of Japan’s most popular anime studios – about 10.30am (local time) on Thursday.

The man thought to have set the fire, apparently in his 40s, was among the injured. He is in police custody and has been taken to hospital.

The Hollywood Reporter said the man had admitted starting the blaze.

Kyoto Animation, which was founded in 1981, has about 160 staff and offices in Tokyo and Kyoto. It has produced numerous features and TV series.
