And the outlook is for … a bitterly cold couple of days

Brace yourself, winter is far from over – and it’s not going to give up its grip on Australia’s south-east easily.

The weather bureau has warned Victorians to expect to feel the worst of a massive winter storm rolling in from Bass Strait on Thursday and Friday.

A severe weather warning has been issued for Victoria, with the forecast featuring damaging winds, rain and potentially large falls of snow in the alps – as well as bitter cold.

South Australians will be the first to feel the full force of the storm, with westerly winds strengthening from late on Wednesday before reaching gale force on Thursday.

The prospects aren’t much brighter for those who live north of the Murray, with NSW also warned to brace for a similar chill, showers and westerly winds. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued wind warnings for much of the NSW south coast.

Commercial broadcaster Weatherzone said a series of cold fronts driven by the deep low pressure system would bring rain, hail, thunderstorms, snow, damaging winds and blizzards to south-eastern Australian in the next two days.

“The impending low pressure system and associated cold fronts are likely to affect parts of South Australia, Tasmania, Victoria, NSW, the ACT and southern Queensland,” it said.

On Wednesday, the weather bureau warned Victorians that some parts of the state might get half their August rain on Thursday and Friday, along with “blustery winds and bitterly cold temperatures”.

Winds will increase as early as Thursday as a low-pressure system passes across Victoria.

“Once it arrives it will become cold very quickly,” forecaster Richard Carlyon said.

Gusts of up to 110 km/h are expected from late Thursday, with Victoria’s Alpine region in for dangerous blizzard conditions with wind speeds reaching 120km/h.

Snow in the region could fall as low as 500 metres above sea level by Friday morning.

“It looks as though there will be at least half a metre of snow at the main resorts by the end of the week,” Mr Carlyon said, adding it will likely lead to blizzard conditions.

There are also gale warnings for Tasmania’s southern coastlines for Wednesday, and strong wind warnings for the state’s north and east for Thursday.

The weather bureau is expected to issue an updated warning later on Wednesday, in company with the SES.
