Prisoner Graham Enniss captured after escape from Risdon facility in Tasmania

An escaped prisoner who has been on the run from Hobart’s Risdon Prison since Monday has been found.

Graham Enniss, 38, had last seen in the Risdon Vale area about 9:30am on Monday.

Residents in the Hobart suburb of Risdon Vale had said they were  “scared” and are double checking their doors are locked as the search unfolded for the prisoner who escaped yesterday.

Police have confirmed Enniss and another inmate got onto a roof and climbed a fence to get out of Risdon Prison.

It is understood that the prisoners escaped using scaffolding that had been left behind after a mural was painted in the prison.

Corrections staff managed to capture the other inmate, but Enniss was able to disappear into bushland.

Earlier, resident Adele Synott said many people in the area were concerned about the escapee.

“I spoke to a few mothers down at the school this morning and they said they went round and double checked doors and locks and everything like that last night. Everyone is scared,” she said.

She said she found out on Facebook yesterday that her daughter’s primary school at Risdon Vale was in lockdown. The school is open as normal today.

“There is a police officer on every exit and entrance to Risdon Vale, so they obviously think he is still in the area, so the school should be in lockdown,” Ms Synott said.

Enniss was being housed in minimum security but has a history of violence.

At the time of his escape, he was serving an eight-year jail sentence for firing a gun at police in 2016.

He is from the north-west of the state and police say they don’t know how familiar he is with Hobart and its surrounds.

In 2011, he escaped from a police car and was at large for 10 days after assaulting his partner.

A few months later he teamed up with another prisoner and broke out of a prison van at the Burnie Magistrates Court.

Enniss’s father yesterday appealed for his son to hand himself in.

Police Association president Col Riley said he was concerned for his members’ safety.

“He was taken in custody for acts of violence against police,” he said.

“So obviously we have the concern that that will repeat itself and we are keen obviously that he is brought back into custody for our members’ safety.

“Trying to recapture an escapee like this is consuming of police resources; I went up there yesterday to have a look in Risdon Vale and I counted 18 police cars that were involved in trying to bring this person back into custody.”

Police had warned the public not to approach the 38-year-old.

Meanwhile, in Burnie 26-year-old Braydon Stanley escaped police custody by walking out the front door of the police station about 4:30pm yesterday.

He was seen an hour later in the Brooklyn area.

Police say Stanley has various tattoos on his neck and face and say he should not be approached.

The community and public sector union’s (CPSU) Tom Lynch said Tasmania’s prison system was overcrowded and understaffed, running up to 20 correctional officers short every day.

“This has now been going on for 18 months, almost on a daily basis parts of the prison are locked down, it’s not sustainable,” he said.

“It comes from a government that wanted to be seen to be tough on law and order; they changed the law, they locked people up for longer, they put more people in prison for longer without investing in infrastructure.”

He said the union had concerns about the way inmates were being classified in an overcrowded system.

“The pressure in the prison system at the moment is very much at the maximum security and particularly at the management end,” he said.

“So we are concerned that inmates that have violent histories both outside … but also inside the prison, are very quickly being downgraded from maximum security to medium and eventually to minimum security.

“That unfortunately puts our members at risk, it puts the other inmates at risk and unfortunately today it’s putting the community at risk.”
