A rescue helicopter is heading to Airlie Beach in north Queensland to airlift two men who have been bitten by a shark.
Queensland Ambulance Service said both men sustained serious lower limb injuries and are in a serious condition.
It is understood one man has a foot injury and the other has an injury to his lower leg.
The men have been assessed by paramedics and are being taken by road to Proserpine Shute Harbour Road where they will be met by the CQ Rescue helicopter.
Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said she didn’t know if the attacked happened somewhere where drum lines had recently been taken out.
“We don’t know exactly where it happened, but I’m told they’re being brought into Airlie Beach so I’m assuming it’s in the Whitsunday region,” she said.
“I’m not going to talk about the politics of drum lines today. My main concern today is for the welfare of these two people that have been injured by what appears to be a shark attack.
“I don’t know if they were diving. I don’t know if it was off-shore. I don’t know if it was outside the marine park.”
Ms Palaszczuk was asked if the Federal Government needed to introduce reforms in the next sitting to allow drum lines to be put back.
“I will not shy away from my stance that the drum lines need to go back in.”
More to come.
