The new chairwoman of the ABC says the Australian media landscape is too “white” and believes the national broadcaster needs to be more diverse.
Ita Buttrose said the ABC needed to better reflect the culture of Australia by having a more ethnically diverse staff.
“We’re made up of many different cultures and nationalities and at the end of the day, most of us call ourselves Australians,” Ms Buttrose told ABC’s Radio National on Tuesday.
“You could say that much of the media is white and we’re not all white.”
As the ABC draws up a five year plan, Ms Buttrose said many Australians were not represented well enough.
“Do we have enough Asian representation? Should we have more? Should we have some Asians on the board?” she said.
“Do we have enough Middle Eastern representation? Should we have some Middle Eastern representatives on the board?”
Ms Buttrose said the issue was not just for the ABC, but were “issues for everybody in any corporate leadership role in Australia”.
The ABC is conducting a national “Australia Talks” survey, which canvasses the opinions of more than 50,000 punters about national identity.
Meanwhile, Ms Buttrose said press freedom was an ongoing battle for the broadcaster.
“We will be continuing on to make the point that the Australian public’s right to know is fundamental to democracy,” she said.
