Crown Resorts executive chairman John Alexander says media should not report whistleblower allegations against the casino operator unless they can verify them.
Nine newspapers this month reported independent MP Andrew Wilkie, who has been calling for a royal commission into the casino industry, would cite claims from an anonymous limousine driver that Crown employees are expected to facilitate bringing overseas high rollers into Australia without customs checks.
The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald acknowledged they were unable to independently verify a video of the driver’s claims and Mr Alexander, a former editor-in-chief of both, will use Crown’s annual general meeting in Melbourne to say he has “never seen a quality news organisation publish a story it openly admits it hasn’t been able to verify.”
“Crown does not tolerate any illegal activity by its employees or its patrons,” Mr Alexander says in his pre-published speech to be delivered on Thursday.
“There are a number of interests and activists who continue to pursue an anti-Crown agenda.”
