MotoGP: Vinales to start from pole at Phillip Island

Spain’s Maverick Vinales will start from pole position in the world MotoGP championship race at Phillip Island after another dominant performance.

Vinales was more than half a second quicker in the weather-delayed second qualifying on Sunday than fellow Yamaha rider Fabio Quartararo of France and eight-time world champion Marc Marquez (Repsol Honda), who make up the remainder of the front row.

It continues a barnstorming run by the Spaniard, who topped the standings in all three practice sessions, as he attempts to claim back-to-back wins in Australia.

Local hope Jack Miller (Pramac Racing Ducati) will start Sunday’s 27-lap race from the third row in ninth position.

Miguel Oliveira was unable to take his place in qualifying, the Red Bull KTM Tech 3 rider declared unfit after his scary high-speed crash that brought an end to Saturday’s action due to high winds.

The wild weather that wreaked havoc at the exposed island circuit and forced qualifying to be postponed abated overnight, allowing grid positions to be finalised.

Rookie of the year Quartararo fought his way through from first qualifying into the second session where he scored a remarkable second position after he took a nasty spill on Friday.

The French sensation suffered a badly bruised ankle when his left foot got caught under his bike as he slid into the gravel and is walking with the aid of crutches

Italian superstar Valentino Rossi will start his 400th grand prix from fourth position, while five-time world champion Jorge Lorenzo’s Honda nightmare continue, the Spaniard qualifying 19th.
