Hazelwood Power Corporation found guilty of putting workers and community at risk during 2014 mine fire

The operator of the Hazelwood Power Station has been found guilty of 10 of 12 charges of putting its workforce and nearby communities at risk in relation to the 2014 mine fire.

The fire started on February 9 when two nearby bushfires spread into the open-cut coal mine and burnt for 45 days, blanketing the region in thick smoke and coal dust.

A Supreme Court jury found the company did not adequately assess the risk of fire, did not have an adequate reticulated water system, failed to slash vegetation around the mine and did not take action early enough to wet down areas around the mine.

Jurors further found there were not enough workers at the site that day with the expertise to fight the fire.

More to come.
