Severe thunderstorm hits Sydney, cutting power and blocking roads

Parts of Sydney have been pummelled by a severe thunderstorm that has brought down trees and cut power across swathes of the city.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a severe thunderstorm for the area from Camden in the south to the Hawkesbury in the north at 1.15pm on Tuesday.

“Severe thunderstorms were detected on the weather radar near Calga, Terrey Hills and St Albans,” it said.

“These thunderstorms are moving towards the south-east. They are forecast to affect Gosford, Woy Woy and Mona Vale by 1.45pm and Budgewoi, Wyong and Tuggerah by 2.15pm.”

Residents were warned to expect damaging winds and large hailstones.

Within half an hour, power outages had reportedly brought the T1 North Shore and Central Coast and Newcastle lines between Berowra and Gordon to a standstill.

Traffic lights were also out at Roseville, while other roads – including hte Pacific Highway at Pymble and Old South Head Road at Bondi – were closed due to fallen trees.
