Two Australians in China tested positive with the deadly coronavirus.
Health Minister Greg Hunt confirmed the positive tests on Thursday afternoon.
He said the pair were in China’s Guangdong province, not Hubei – which is epicentre of the outbreak of the coronavirus that has infected more than 7000 people.
Mr Hunt said the Australians were being treated and had not yet sought consular assistance.
Confirmation of the Australians with the virus came as the death toll from the lethal outbreak rose to 162 on Thursday.
The World Health Organisation will hold an emergency meeting on Thursday night (Australian time) to decide whether the coronavirus constitutes a global emergency. The WHO has already voiced “grave concern” about the increasing person-to-person spread of the coronavirus.
Director-general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the WHO was worried by the progress of the virus in Germany, Vietnam and Japan, especially in human-to-human transmission, as well as in China.
“Although the numbers outside China are still relatively small, they hold the potential for a much larger outbreak,” he said.
