Richard Di Natale quits as Greens leader, Bob Katter also steps aside

Greens leader Richard Di Natale has quit, and will leave Parliament within months.

The Nine newspapers reported Senator Di Natale’s resignation on Monday morning.

The Victorian senator, who has led the Greens since 2015, said the decision to quit was “very difficult”. The party will vote for a new leader and new deputy leader on Tuesday.

“It’s a tough, demanding job. It’s been a privilege to do it. But I’ve got to the point in my life where I’ve got two young boys [and] I want to be there for them,” Senator Di Natale said.

Dr Di Natale, who has been leader of the party since 2015 told colleges that he wanted to spend more time with his family.

The 10-member parliament will vote for a new leadership on Tuesday,  and those of co-deputy leaders Adam Bandt and Larissa Waters, which are automatically spilled when a leader resigns.

Meanwhile, maverick federal MP Bob Katter is also stepping aside. He announced on Monday he would pass his party’s leadership baton to son Robbie so he has more time to focus on his enemies.

Robbie Katter is a member of the Queensland Parliament and leader of the state’s Katter Australian Party branch.

“I desperately need the time to get these dams built and to get at the throats of enemies – the free marketeers and the lily-pad left – and I simply can’t do that while I have to do the leadership role,” Mr Katter said on Monday.
