Schoolies week cancelled as three new coronavirus cases in Queensland linked to corrective services trainer

Schoolies will not be going ahead on the Gold Coast, with the state government deeming the event too high risk.

The news comes as three new case of coronavirus were recorded in Queensland overnight, all linked to a trainer at corrective services who tested positive earlier this week.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said two of the cases were at Pinkenba on the Gold Coast and the other was from Forest Lake in Brisbane.

She said all 25 people deemed close contacts of the trainer returned negative results.

The developments have forced stricter gathering restrictions for the whole of the Gold Coast area, limiting both indoor and outdoor gatherings to just ten people.

As a result, Chief Health Officer Jeanette Young deemed November’s Schoolies event as too risky.

Beach-side concerts and the other big events usually held within Surfers Paradise during that time will not be going ahead.

The new gathering restrictions will be in place through to December 11, after the Schoolies period.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk hopes school leavers understand how serious this is.

“It poses high risk. High risk, not only the people who attend, all the young people, but also all the people they come in contact with, and of course their families and their friends and their grandparents.

With the latest cases hitting the Gold Coast, the Premier said new restrictions will come into place as of Saturday 8:00am.

As with Greater Brisbane, gatherings inside and outside people’s homes will be limited to 10 people.

“We know that people travel a lot from the Gold Coast to Brisbane so now it makes absolutely perfect sense to extend that,” she said.
