NZ terror report recommends new intelligence agency

The Royal Commission into the Christchurch Mosques terror attacks recommends a new security agency for New Zealand and a raft of other changes.

On Tuesday, the NZ Government will release the 792-page report, which has taken over a year to produce.

News outlet Stuff has already reported many of the recommendations, which includes the new intelligence bureaucracy and hate speech laws.

Stuff reports there are 44 recommendations in all, with a focus on improving government.

On Monday, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern committed to appointing a new minister to oversee the response to the Royal Commission.

The most likely candidate for that role is senior Christchurch MP Megan Woods, the Energy and Housing Minister, who has deep roots to the affected communities.

Stuff also reports that Dunedin doctors treated the Australian-born terrorist for accidentally shooting himself in the months leading up to the attack.

In mid-2018, the terrorist discharged a gun while cleaning it at his home, resulting in bullet fragments in his eye and leg.

Health workers did not tell police about the accident, nor did the man’s landlord, who had to repair his property.

The report will be publicly released at 2pm NZDT (12pm AEDT).
