Search crews have located the bodies of two women who were sucked into a whirlpool while on a canyoning tour in the Blue Mountains.
The women, believed to be aged 24 and 39, were part of a 10-person guided tour when they disappeared beneath the water’s surface in Wollangambe Canyon at Mount Wilson yesterday.
Because of the area’s remote location, police were not alerted until 2:30pm.
Due to poor weather conditions, an initial search for the women was suspended about 6:00pm yesterday and police were out in force again at first light today.
Police rescue officers, along with police divers, a specialty paramedic team and National Parks and Wildlife Service workers were onsite this morning.
Authorities established a forward command centre at the Mount Wilson and Mt Irvine rural fire brigade station.
Arrangements are now underway for a helicopter to recover the bodies.
The other members of the group were unharmed.
