Two new coronavirus infections in Gold Coast hotel quarantine

Queensland has recorded two new cases of coronavirus detected in hotel quarantine on the Gold Coast.

The state’s chief health officer, Dr Jeannette Young, said both cases were returned travellers from the United States who have now been taken to hospital.

A total of 7990 tests were conducted in the past 24 hours across Queensland where 25 cases remain active.

Premier Annastacia Palaszczuk said health authorities will advise Greater Brisbane residents tomorrow whether or not restrictions will be lifted for public venues and households on Friday.

“What we’re seeing here in Queensland is everyone is doing a fantastic job and we are on track for lifting those restrictions at 9.00am on Friday 22,” she said.

“We are 100 per cent on track to lift those restrictions if everything goes well in the next 24 hours.

“We’ve got one more day to go.”

The lifting of restrictions on Friday will bring the state back to the level of restrictions that were in place prior to Christmas.

Dr Young said positive results from sewage testing around the state showed how important it was for people to immediately get tested if they developed symptoms.

“We have got some positive sewerage results in the Gold Coast, which is to be expected given all of these cases that we’ve seen down there in hotel quarantine,” Dr Young said.

“We do have another positive sewerage result in Cairns north, and we do know that we had that case up there that was intermittently shedding … we’ve had a positive sewerage in Cannonvale in Mackay.”

The Premier said a proposal was currently being put together for a quarantine facility at Gladstone.

“This is not a problem unique to Queensland – it’s an issue for all of Australia,” she said.

“So I’m looking forward to speaking with the Prime Minister later on this week to put forward some suggestions and some ideas and hopefully also we’ll be raising it at National Cabinet.”
