Reports of escaped animal spark zoo lockdown

A Sydney zoo was abruptly locked down on Friday morning amid reports of an escaped animal.

Visitors to Sydney Zoo, at Bungarribee in the city’s west, were reportedly stopped from entering the compound, sparking alarm.

One man told Sydney’s 2GB radio that people had been told to stay in their vehicles.

“It’s getting packed now … people everywhere,” he said.

“They’re a bit insistent on you getting back in your car.”

The zoo later denied reports of an animal escape, and confirmed what had sparked the sudden lockdown.

“Sydney Zoo is sad to announce the death of Mogli, a beloved member of our chimpanzee troop. Mogli was found in the chimpanzee habitat this morning by our team,” it said in a Facebook post.

“We are currently investigating the circumstances and once more information is known we will make a further statement.

“We would like to confirm that media reports of an escaped animal are false. The team are in a state of deep shock and grief.”

The ABC reported that emotional zoo staff were seen comforting each other as the animal’s body was fished out of a pond about 10.30am.

It was then wrapped in a tarpaulin and taken to a warehouse inside the zoo compound.

The zoo, Sydney’s second, opened in December 2019.
