Victoria records one new case of COVID-19 as Sydney on edge as list of exposure sites grows

Victoria has recorded one new locally acquired case of COVID-19 but worryingly, eight new cases in hotel quarantine.

Health authorities confirmed the new case is a primary close contact who has been in quarantine.

Health authorities tested 16,290 people during the past 24 hours to midnight on Sunday, down from a high of about 57,000 tests conducted when the so-called Whittlesea cluster forced Victoria into a two-week on June 3.

It’s the fifth consecutive day the state has recorded one or fewer new local cases.

Acting Premier James Merlino confirmed on Sunday the state remained on track for an easing of restrictions later this week.

Meanwhile, the state’s health authorities have tightened restrictions for travellers from NSW amid an outbreak there.

Sydney remains on edge as the Bondi cluster grew to nine cases on Sunday.

The health department added the local government areas of Bayside, Canada Bay, Inner West and Randwick to its list of orange zones on Sunday evening.

Anyone travelling to Victoria from these areas must get a COVID test and isolate until they receive a negative result.

The City of Sydney, Waverley and Woollahra LGAs have already been listed as orange zones.

On Sunday, Premier Gladys Berijiklien said it was a critical time for authorities trying to prevent a “super-spreading” event.

The premier also expressed some frustration at the pace of Australia’s vaccine rollout, saying she would raise the issue at national cabinet on Monday.

“For us, the issue is supply. If you get us the doses, between the GP network and the NSW government, we will get those jabs in arms but the challenge for us is getting supply and getting those vaccines,” Ms Berijiklien said.

“The vaccine is our road to freedom, our road to a COVID-normal life but can I say in the interim how important it is, we are nowhere near having vaccinated the majority of our population yet, so all of us have to do the right thing in the next few days.”
