Labor boss suspended over reporting of $100,000 donation quits

Suspended NSW Labor boss Kaila Murnain has resigned as the party’s state general-secretary.

Labor members learned of the resignation in an email sent by the party’s NSW president Mark Lennon on Thursday morning.

“The terms of the separation agreement are confidential, but consist of Ms Murnain’s basic legal entitlements,” the email said.

Ms Murnain stood aside in August after revealing to the Independent Commission Against Corruption that she failed to act on information Chinese billionaire Huang Xiangmo had donated to the party.

She said former upper house MP Ernest Wong told her in September 2016 about Mr Huang’s illicit donation but was encouraged by lawyers to keep quiet.

Ms Murnain broke down in the witness box at an ICAC anti-corruption hearing, admitting she was “scared” when she misled electoral funding authorities about the $100,000 donation.

Mr Huang is accused of being the true source of $100,000 in cash donations from 12 people to a 2015 Chinese Friends of Labor dinner.
