Victoria confirms 134 COVID cases ahead of renewed lockdown

Victoria has confirmed 134 new coronavirus cases, as five million people across metropolitan Melbourne and its surrounds prepare to go back into lockdown for six weeks.

Premier Daniel Andrews confirmed on Wednesday that 11 cases were linked to known outbreaks and 123 were under investigation.

It comes as residents in metropolitan Melbourne and the Mitchell Shire, immediately north of the city, prepare to go into stage three lockdown from midnight Wednesday.

“I apologise for the inconvenience, the great challenge that many, many Victorian families are going to have to experience over these next six weeks,” Mr Andrews said.

“It’s not where we wanted to be. But we can’t go back. We can’t change those things that have got us to this point. We can only respond appropriately.”

More than one million coronavirus tests have been conducted in Victoria.

Mr Andrews said 11 of Wednesday’s cases were linked to known outbreaks, while the remainder were still be investigated. They included 75 linked to the public housing towers that went into a hard lockdown on Saturday.

Victoria has 860 active coronavirus cases and there are 41 COVID patients in hospital, including seven in intensive care.
